I've Got The Blues!

For me the past year has been so many things I can't list them. Educational, musical, heart wrenching, happy, sad, inspiring, life changing... but all of those things have added up to experiences that I will never forget or regret. One of my favorite things is the fact that I have met and interviewed some amazing Artists and Legends of Blues. Last year I met and interviewed Legend Jimmy McCracklin who brought us 'The Walk' and 'The Drag' among many other hits. This started me on my path to interview and share as many Legends of Blues as I could. Through meeting these creative energies I have learned more about life, love, dedication and music than I ever imagined I would.

Since that meeting I've worked with and interviewed some fabulous people with histories that we could only imagine. Not all good, some grueling. But whatever, these people have remained true to their passion and dreams. And that in my eyes makes them worth every second of life.

I remember as a child hearing 'respect your elders!' In fact, I used to hear it all the time when I was a child. As an adult, not so much. Times have changed and certainly the respect levels have changed in a lot of the younger generation. Not a knock on them, just truth. Unfortunately many of the values that used to be so important have been lost to the times. But I believe that through education and information some can learn just how important it is to remember and hold high those that came before us, those that paved the way, and those that are still paving the way. Which is why I love the Blues generation! Blues seemed to be born out of pain. But they are also born out of passion, energy and love. There are many definitions of the word Legend. But to me a Legend is one who has 'lived and gived' LOL seriously. Someone who has experienced their dreams through living, life, pain and love. Someone who has spent a life working passionately to not only create the energy that keeps them moving, but moves us all. I give props! I give props! And Respect and I thank all of those who have shared their history and passion with all of us. Introducing The Diva, Joan Cartwright. With a lifetime of music rich history this lady brings her energetic spirit to Living In Color to share with you!

Hi Joan. Let’s start with some history. Where were you born and raised?

I was born Joan Renée Cartwright, on December 7, 1947, at Kew Gardens Hospital, NY, raised in the Bronx, until I was three, when we moved to an attached, three-story home on Inwood Street, in South Ozone Park, Queens, NY.

What were you like as a child? Did you sing a lot then?

Yes! When I was four, I began dancing lessons with Bernice Johnson Dance School just off of Sutphin Boulevard and Liberty Avenue, in Jamaica, NY. At five, Bernice gave Mom the sheet music to “Somebody Loves Me” with two sets of lyrics – English and French. Mom loved French, so she taught me both lyrics and, at our recital, that year, I sang the song at the Lowe’s Theater on Hillside Avenue for the large crowd of parents and attendees. By eight, I was featured in nine routines. The most memorable was with a little boy singing, “Walking My Baby Back Home.” Our costumes were gorgeous. I wore a white dress in that routine with a crinoline underskirt. The other outfit I loved had black, shiny streamers on the spandex body suit that we used for our interpretive routine. I there for four years and dancing school was the formation of my performance career. Bernice’s husband, the infamous saxophonist Budd Johnson would keep me at their home, until Bernice picked me up for class. He’d take me to the basement, where he practiced. Photos of famous musicians lined the staircase walls. He’d play his saxophone and, when I was 27, I realized THAT’s how I learned how to scat!

From eight to 13, I sang in the choir at St. Clement Pope Catholic Church. I attended the school and played tenor drum and glockenspiel in the marching and maneuvering band. We were State Champions one year and we marched in the Puerto Rican Day Parade up 5^th Avenue. When I went to Bishop McDonnell High School in Brooklyn, I was in the Glee Club and Theater Ensemble, where I played Elisa Doolittle in “My Fair Lady.”

Was there musical influence in your family?

My father loved classical and jazz music, while my mother preferred finger-poppin’ R&B and Soul music.

Other than greatly appreciating music, my father didn’t play any instrument. Mom played a little piano and we had one in our basement in Queens. She loved to sing, though, and she and I often engaged in our own personal operas. She’d be in the basement, where we had our brightly lit, yellow-painted kitchen, and I’d be upstairs dusting or making up the beds. She would sing out, “Oh, Renée!” and I’d reply, “Oh, Ma Maaaaaa!” We had a lot of fun singing back and forth to each other.

Who were your Artistic influences and what music did you listen too?

Dad owned so many albums that he played on our ebony wood Grundig Stereo. There were records of Ella, Sarah, Billie, Carmen, Nancy Wilson, Morgana King, Sally Green, then, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, Nat King Cole, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, all the greats! And my favorite pastime was to turn all the lights out at night and listen to these records by the tiny, white light on the front of the huge stereo cabinet. By the age of 12, I knew the lyrics to every song the singers recorded, including Lush Life, ‘Round Midnight, All of Me, Satin Doll, all the standard tunes of the 40s and 50s were in my little head.

When you sat and thought about ‘what you wanted to be when you grew up’ what did you think?

Always, I wanted to be a singer. That’s all I ever wanted to be, except that I had a dream of being a mother and wife. I married very young, at 16. I was pregnant with my son and gave birth to Michael, six months before I married his father. At 18, I had my daughter, Michele (Mimi). It was good that I had my children young because by 43, I began touring in Europe and my children were grown.

What was your first experience singing in front of an audience?

I was four, performing in recital with the Bernice Johnson Dancing School Ensemble. I was captivated by the footlights!

When did you publish your first song and what agency were you with?

My first published song was “Sweet Return”, an instrumental recorded by Freddie Hubbard and the Kool Jazz All-Stars of 1983. I played the piano piece at Philadelphia’s Robin Hood Dell, in Freddie’s dressing room. He made me play it 25 times! Joe Sample came into the room and Freddie said, “Play it for Joe.” Then, he told Joe, “I’m taking her to the studio tomorrow to record this!” I almost fell off the stool in shock! And he did! At Atlantic Records Studio in NY, around 3 p.m. the next afternoon, he gave me $120 and told me to go around the corner to Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) and open up my publishing house, which I did! I was with BMI for 23+ years, but decided, a couple of years ago, to change to ASCAP because I never got many royalties from BMI, although I filled out numerous publishing and writer’s forms, in Europe. I’m waiting to see if ASCAP will pay me royalties. By the way, Freddie took the publishing for “Sweet Return”, so I was only paid writer’s royalties all those years. But my song is his song book, making me the only other composer in the Freddie Hubbard Song Book besides him!

Do you write your own songs? Do you play any instruments?

I began writing lyrics and songs, in 1977, in Philadelphia, where I was enrolled at LaSalle College in the Music Department. I had a wonderful private piano teacher, Gerald Price, who taught me music theory, piano and vocal phrasing. He taught me how to write music and put the lyrics on the paper with the notes and chords. By the time I moved back to NY, in 1982, I’d written several songs. To date, I have written over 60 songs and have 41 published in the Joan Cartwright Song Book, available at www.lulu.com

What is your funniest or most unique experience as an Artist? Like when traveling or performing.

The owner of the Gerlafingerhof Hotel, where I lived for two years, in Switzerland, was owned and operated by the lead gay man (the Puff Mommy) of the region. He said, “Joan, I have a gig for you!” The money was right and all I had to do was sing two songs for 500 gay men at a huge hall outside of Berne, the capital. Onstage, was a tall aluminum ladder that was placed there for me to descend upon. I practiced with two muscular males, standing with their arms crossed, at the bottom (security?!*) But, nobody told me that, when I did the actual performance, there would be smoke clouds all around me!!!

I sang, “I Am What I Am” and “I Will Survive.” These men clapped and stomped so hard that I was told to go back out on the stage and sing another song. I sang, “Think”, Aretha Franklin’s hit! Now, Stephano, the show’s coordinator told me, specifically, that I was only to sing TWO songs. So, when he insisted that I go out and sing a fourth song, I was flabberghasted! I sang my song, “Treat Me Right and You Don’t Have To Marry Me”, during which I also sing, “Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On”, which is my signature song that I also make the whole audience sing, “Oh, Baby,” back and forth with me.

Now, you would think all of that was enough. But nooooooooo! When I emerged from the dressing room, where I dried off from being dripping wet with sweat and changed my clothing, I met a 19-year-old Swiss boy who said, “You are great!!! But I have just one question.”

I stood there, waiting for the question and he queried, “Are you a man or a woman?”

After doubling over with laughter, I told him, “Baby, they don’t have this much silicon, in one place!”

I’ve told this story over and over and over again, to the amusement of many of my friends.

LOL That is funny Joan! How many CDs do you have and where can we find them?

I have two CDS: “Feelin’ Good” recorded in 1995, in Catania, Sicily, co-produced by my pianist Giovanni Mazzarino with Nello Toscano on bass, Mimmo Cafiero on drums and Oracio Maugeri on saxophone. This CD contains 11 tracks, with four of my originals. It was first released on Tireno Records in Milan, Italy, but the company went out of business, the next year and, when I returned to Florida, I repackaged it and released it under my own label - I AM Records, under my own publishing company, FYI Communications, Inc.

My sophomore CD, “In Pursuit of a Melody”, is a compilation of 15 tracks with seven originals and my lyrics to “A Night In Tunisia” by Dizzy Gillespie. It was compiled at our studio in Atlanta, GA, and released in 2005 on my own label, under my publishing company.

Also, on CDBaby is a two-song recording with my song “Love Translation”.

I produced the Women in Jazz South Florida Compilation CD Volume I, in January 2011, with 10 songs from 10 fabulous female composers, all of whom are member of www.wijsf.org

Would you say your career is going the way you dreamed it would?

I have had a charmed life! My career took a marvelous turn in 1990, when I visited Europe for five weeks in the summer. First, I flew to Amsterdam, Holland, where I went to the North Sea Jazz Festival. There, I met members of the Lionel Hampton Band, who encouraged me to take the 10-hour train ride to Nice, France for the JVC Festival. I stayed there two days and got to see the Hampton Band, the Basie Band, Miles Davis, George Benson, Etta James, Digable Planets, and T.S. Monk! That was a very good move. Then, I took another 10-hour train ride up to Montreux, Switzerland. That’s where the magic happened!

A Belgique woman, whom I met at a telephone booth at the Montreux Jazz Festival, latched on to me and followed me everywhere for the next three days. We wound up at the jam session at the Duke’s Bar of the Hyatt Hotel, where all the musicians gathered at night, after the festival concerts were done. I sat in and sang “Georgia” and “Summertime” and Cecil fell in love with my voice. Three days later, we were at the Janus Club of the fabulous Beau Rivage Palace in Lausanne, Switzerland. I sang the same two songs with the piano duo who were booked there for the month of July. The manager Claude Gassette was sitting in a corner, talking with Cecil. The next thing I new, she had negotiated a $6,000 contract for me to sing there for the entire month of November with another pianist, Angelo Unia, from Cuneo, Italy. After our month was up, Angelo invited me to join him in Italy for some concerts. I never looked back.

From June 1990 to September 1996, I toured eight European countries. In 1995, I sang for the Duke of Marlborough and the Duchess of Kent at their Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, England, for the fundraiser for the new Music School at Oxford University.

In 1993, a Sicilian drummer, whom I’d met in Switzerland, called my agent to ask if I would accept a contract to perform on the San Vito Jazz Festival, in Sicily. There, I met the pianist Giovanni Mazzarino, whom I toured with for four years and recorded my first CD, “Feelin’ Good”. We performed with his trio from Bolzano, on the German border of Italy, to Trieste in the eastern corner of Italy, to Milan, Rome, Calabria and all over the island of Sicily. In Switzerland, I had the fortune of having a booking agent who booked me in beautiful hotels and restaurants all over the country. I performed two consecutive New Year’s parties at the Bellevue Hotel in Gstaad and was on the cover of that cities newspaper, as well as the cover of Jazz Times. I did a tour of the Spaghetti Factory chain and performed for the opening of the largest and most elegant Mövenpick Restaurant in Zurich. Also, I performed for one of the seven Presidents of Switzerland at the Classic Car Show in 1991, high up in the Alps.

You are quite a busy woman! You’ve traveled quite a bit.What is your favorite travel destination?

Taormina, Sicily and Bahia, Brazil.

Let’s talk about ‘Women In Jazz’ What is the organization about?

Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit, educational organization that promotes women musicians, globally, through events, concerts, performances, clinics, lectures, workshops, articles, interviews, newsletters, courses, contacts, research, history, archives, websites, film, audio and video recording, and recognition.

You also write books. How many have you written? They are all inspirational books aren’t they?

I’ve published nine books and have two more on the drawing board. The three poetry books: GaiaMind Poems, Rhythms of the Heart and The Moon, Sun Showers, Rainbows and Whipped Cream Clouds are inspirational. Two books are informative lectures: Amazing Musicwomen and So, You Want To Be A Singer? about The Business of Music. My history book is The History of African-American Jazz and Blues. The Joan Cartwright Song Book has 41 original songs, and Songs For My Children has four songs for kids. My first book is In Pursuit of a Melody, is an anthology of my memoirs, travels in Europe, 35 poems, 40 songs and the two lectures. Artistically Speaking with Larry Hatfield

I met Larry Hatfield at a shoot for a Cable Show in the works. As I interviewed a guest I noticed that Larry, sitting on the other side of the studio was sketching and was impressed to see he had made great sketches of the guests I was interviewing. As you know, Art immediately catches my eye and there you have it!

Hi Larry. How are you?

Your work is beautiful. Very detailed and colorful watercolors. I love the fact that I recognize many of the places you paint.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Rock Island, Illinois, part of the Quad Cities, once the farm implement capital of the world, Weyerhauser started there bringing logs down the Mississippi until the dams and bridges went in. The first Railroad Bridge over the river was there. Where the Rock River and Hennepin Canal flow into the Mississippi. The home of Criminal, John Looney, who was portrayed in the movie "Road to Perdition". They changed his name to Rooney. The last battle with Native Americans East of the Mississippi, The Blackhawk War, was near there. There was a large encampment of Sauk and Mesquakie in Rock Island

Wow Larry. Thank you for that bit of education. I love it! What were you like as a child?

I played a lot outside with friends, caught crawdads in the creek, made bows and arrows and slingshots, climbed trees--we lived next to a large wooded area.

What were your creative activities as a child?

Our neighborhood group of kids invented games, built tree-houses, underground houses that filled with water and spiders and were abandoned. After I had some art classes in school, I remember going out to draw on my own a few times. I remember watching my mother practice the Vibes in the living room (this was an influence that I recognized much later)

Do you remember if you thought “I’m an Artist” when you were young?

No, I don't think I had a category of "Artist" in my brain to place myself into. I didn't know anyone, hadn't heard of anyone, who was an artist. In high school I learned that a neighbor had gone to Paris to study painting, but he was a proprietor of a small neighborhood grocery, not a practicing artist.

What medium(s) do you like to work with most?

I have always liked pencil, but the last three and a half years, I have been trying to learn to paint with watercolors.

What types of things inspire you to paint?

Briefly I'll say that I am a Christian and I look at the landscape as God's Creation. Which means that being creative is not random/accidental, but in tune with the highest reality. There is a great deal of diversity but also an order, kind of like Jazz with its improvisation but also with the standards. J. S. Bach would write J.J. and S.D.G in the margins of his compostions. Sometimes he spelled them out, Jesu Juva (Jesus Help), and Soli Deo Gloria (only God's Glory).

You’ve visited other Countries in the name of Art? Where have you been and what would you say is the difference between what you saw and learned there and here?

I have traveled to Western Europe a few times. My wife and I lived in London for about 18 months. I am not qualified as an art critic or historian. It seems that sometimes Americans have followed European trends and sometimes the other way. In general, I would say its more acceptable, legitimate, to be and artist in Europe than in America. There isn't much of a cultural space for artists here. We are either very pragmatic, utilitarian, or celebrity oriented to see that painting is worth doing unless you can become a celebrity artist.

What is the Plein Air painting experience like for you?

Plein Air, just means painting on site outdoors. It comes from the French "en plein aire" if my French is right. The gamut of color and light that is present in the outdoors can't be captured on camera. The color gamut of photography is considerably smaller, and commercially printed pictures are very much less full of the color of the creation. The experience of being there encompasses everything you can think of, light, color, sound, weather, etc. and that is part of "seeing the place". The challenges are that the light is always changing, shadows move, bugs crawl on you and the painting, birds bomb you. In Oregon, I had a squirrel perch above me and drop bark and pine cones on me while chattering away, protesting my presence.

Do you have other Artistic outlets?

Right now I am concentrating on watercolor. In the nearly 30 years that I was working full-time and couldn't paint or draw, or was too discouraged to. I found that growing flowers was like painting my yard with color. And coaching soccer had a satisfaction of seeing patterns and rhythms of combination of players with the ball.

Who are some of your favorite Artists?

I'll have to limit this to painters, even then there are too many to list all. Most of what I like is representational. This may not be in chronological order, but here are some that come to mind: Albrect Durer, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Goya, Turner, Cole and the Hudson River School, Rouault, Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth. Contemporary artists : Makoto Fujimura, John Taft, Michael Reardon (Oakland Watercolorist), Carol Aust www.carolaust.com and many others.

What is your opinion about the ‘State of Art’ right now?

The "Art World" has lost direction. There is no more Avant Guarde rebelling against the Academy. The ideas of Truth and Beauty and the link between them was abandoned by the philosophers some time ago and now everything drifts. If anyone is interested in this, others are better than I am at analysing these culturals trends. I just finished a book that I would recommend, Saving Leonardo by Nancy Pearcey. She is a Christian woman who comes from that worldview. She is writing primarily to the church in general, but if you are not into church, you can still get a lot out of it because she does a great job of explaining what ideas lead to what trends in Art from the Enlightenment to now in Western Art. And she gives a framework for understanding how big ideas translate into visual art, and music, and other arts.

Do you sell your Art?

Yes, at shows, galleries and open studios. I have one piece at the Richmond Art Center Member's Show now. At the end of July I am in the Benicia Art and Wine Festival with 2 other watercolor artists.

Do you have any inspirational words you can offer other Artists?

I don't feel qualified to be a mentor, but all I know is that I was made to do this. It took many decades for me to really know this for sure. I tried to ignore it, abandon it, forget it, but I wasn't really happy or fulfilled by all the other things I did except in small ways that I could be creative in those roles. So, if its in you, do it.

Mr Instrrumentalist - A Musical Force of Nature!

MrInstrumentalist. Where did that name come from?

The name comes from my love of instrumental music. Even when I listen to songs with singing in them I'm paying more attention to the instrumentation in the background. I write arrange, mix and play all the parts in my songs. The beauty of music is such a wonderful thing. I love the blending of different instruments, all contributing their part to create something that triggers your emotions. Whether it makes you smile, laugh, cry, upsets you or any other emotion. I just want to put a smile on your face and/or get you up dancing. If you can't get out of bed you can dance in your mind. I do that all the time. 'scuse me while I dance in my chair.

What instruments do you play? Do you sing?

I started off playing the guitar, bass drums and harmonica. I became interested in keyboards very early and now keyboards has become my love. My singing is servicable . I'm no professional vocalist but I think I manage well enough for the songs that I write. Don't book me to sing the National Anthem at the next Super Bowl though. I'll gladly play you an Instrumental version of it though.

Where did you grew up? And what was the musical climate like there?

I was raised in northeaset Houston, Texas. There was a lot of blues and country coming out of Texas. but I have to say though that there is music in everything to me so I got musical inspiration out of life and it's experiences more so than just listening to music.

So, what was your childhood like?

I grew up in a very modest home. We were far from rich: closer to poverty than prosperity but my mother always made sure we were comfortable. Sometimes we would have rice for dinner. My wonderful mother put so much love into it and she would say we're having "hot buttered rice". I'ts such a beautiful thing to be raised by such an outsdanding special lady like my mother. Ms Willette Stephens is her name and I am who I am today because of her. I was into my music making so much as a youth. I had great friends and we played football outside almost everyday, much like the kids play basketball now. I remember running through all of our neighbors yards, touch in the street and tackle in the grass and I know you fellas know what blind man sidelines meant. Ouch! I was shy unless I was performing. I enjoyed rapping and mixing and scratching as well as playing keyboards. Life was simple and good then.

Are there musical influences in your family?

Threre was always music going on in my home. My mother would sing gospel songs, mostly mahalia Jackson. On the other end of the spectrum there would be Texas blues coming out of an. I used to try to get my brother involved in the music. I used to get into rap battles in high school. My aunt was an accomplished gospel pianist. My first musical experience was making beats on an old desk while my cousin sang. I wish I still had the tapes we made of that.

Who were some of your influences growing up?

Roger Troutman, Lightning Hopkins, Phil collins, Kurtis Blow and Gary Newman were my earliest influences. I like the innovators like Jimi Hendrix, Buddy rich, Charlie Cristian, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Barry White, Louis Armstrong Stanley Clarke, JS Bach, Afrika Bambata and Kurtis Blow. My favorite artists are the ones that came out doing something you had never heard before as opposed to the ones that when you hear them you say "oh he/she sounds like..." Ym exception would be Roger Troutman. now I knw there were talkboxes before him but noone did it like Roger. Roger is my all time favorite performer and artist.

Was it always your dream to be an entertainer?

Maybe not a big time star but I always recieved satisfaction from putting a smile on someone's face. I know that I was born to make music and even though I am my biggest critic my music is still my favorite music. now that may sound a it concieted but if I don't love my music I cannot expect others to feel what I am doing. I'm not the most technically gifted musician but every note that I play comes from deep within my soul. I am talking to you when I play music for you and fortunately there are some that like what I am saying. I am eternally grateful for all of you that support my music and I love you all.

When you realized that you were headed in the direction you wanted to be in what was that like?

I cannot see myself not making music. Music is in my blood and in my heart. It is my dream to be able to make as much music as possible all the time. I do believe there are enough good people that have the same taste in music that I have that will support the music that I play. I am trying to find them all. Of course not everyone will like my music and I respect that. I just have to keep playing and keep hustling until I find all of those that hear what I am saying through my music.

What inspires you to Sing?

There is music in everything. every color has a sound happiness has a sound. the sky has a sound. I can see a dog walking down the street and music comes to me. Sometimes I am asleep and I dream Im playing a song and then I get up and write that song. I am inspired by the beauty, despair, sadness, humor and the colors of life.

What would you call your style of music? And why did you choose that Genre?

I just like to make music. I reluctantly use the term smooth jazz just because you have to fit in somewhere. I like to think my music is "funky smooth relaxation" but there are no categories with such a name. Oh well. My classical music is more of a cinematic style. What I really like to do is blend elements and colors and come up with something different. I am also a rock musician so you will hear some of that from me as well. In fact if you hear a style of music that you haven't heard from me before, don't think I'm selling out or anything. I'm just experimenting and enjoying all colors of the musical spectrum.

I read that you are a Studio Engineer. For those of us that don’t know, what is that?

A studio engineer is the guy that records your performance and assists the artist/producer in making sure your "tracks" gel together sonically into the sound that the artist has in their head. That's oversimplifying greatly. You have to have an ear and you have to know what and what not to do. An engineer is your link between you and all the equipment in the recording studio. He/she understands what all those knobs on the equipment in the studio. When you say to the engineer you can tell the engineer in laymans terms how you want something to sound and the engineer knows what buttons to push in order to make that happen. Most people see videos where artists are in the studio singing into a mic and then BAM, we have a finished song. Actually if you don't love what you are doing studio work can be strenuous. You might hear that song or parts of it over and over again, recording the same take over and over. I love it all though.

I am a total Nature Lover and love the fact that you put many of your songs to images of beautiful natural spots. What inspired you to do that?

Because there is so much music in the water, the sky, the trees that those images just have to be accompanied by some soothing, funky relaxing music. The trees live for it. As you know plants respond positively so soothing sound. This is why people talk nicely to plants and they grow. Muaic is such a wonderful thing.

Do you play live any where? If so, where?

I am not playing live at the moment but I will play live where people want to hear me.

What’s in the works for you?

I am currently working on a funky smooth relaxation album (can I still say album?) that will be available at my website. "Lake Travis" and "Galveston Beach" are the first two singles so this is the direction I am going in with this project. My first album " So Much to Say" is already available on my website and features "Whats Next?" and Midnight Livin. Both of these albums will be available on Itunes, Amazon Rhapsody and all major online retailers in the future. I am currently looking for radio on air and online that will play my music. I am an unsigned artist so all of my support comes from the people.

I’ll admit I’m not one for reading books unless they are related to Art or what I call junk reading. Books about nothing that make a whole lot of sense while you’re reading them. But when I was asked to review this book ‘Your Money Matters’ with chapter titles like Resolution, Courage and Vision I was enticed. I like to hear those words in any situation and especially in the same text as Money!

The book was written by Mari L. McCarthy of CreateWriteNow who lives her dreams while dealing with MS, working her Singing Career and teaching Journaling Skills for life.

This book serves as a guidebook and workbook to help you use Journaling as a tool to understand and change your financial situation. Teach yourself to appreciate and celebrate your finances. I’ve always promoted Journaling for healing but never considered it when it came to Finances. This is fresh and full of info and ideas.

Another fabulous thing about this E-Book is the fact that it’s not too long so you don’t lose sight of the message.I can’t guarantee this will change your life but I can say it will change your way of thinking about the state and challenges of your finances. It will help you understand and correct. It’s hands on and head up! Definitely an E-Book worth reading.

Author Nicky Wooten of Colton, Ca where she lives with her husband and two children shares with us about her detailed and gritty yet real and heartfelt book 'Sentenced at Birth'.

How are you today Nicky?

I’m doing absolutely wonderful today, the sun is shining and God is wonderful. Thanks for asking.

Where were you raised and what type of childhood did you have?

I was raised in Brooklyn, NY with my five brothers. We were raised in a single parent home and weren’t always fortunate to have the things we wanted but always had the things we needed. When you’re a child most of the materialistic crap doesn’t matter. I had my brothers and my four cousins who would be there practically every day so life was grand to us then. We’d play skelly in the middle of the street, manhunt, suicide, stick ball, etc. We made the best out of what we had and had fun doing it.

Were you a creative child? If so, why types of creative things did you do?

I was a very creative child. I had an imagination out of this world, lol. I use to write poetry and music but I also used to run around the house in actress mode all day, practicing for my big debut. I was so dramatic.

Was writing something you did regularly?

Yes it was. I knew from early on writing was what I wanted to do, so everyday I’d sit down and write a poem or two then later on that evening I’d recite them for my grandmother, her friends and anyone else that wanted to hear it.LOL

You told me that you self published. Let’s talk about that. What made you decide to self publish?

Well I decided to self publish for a number of reasons but mainly because I felt I needed creative control over my writing. Everything I write is personal to me. After you spend so much time on something it becomes apart of you in one way or another and for someone you just met to come in and gain full control of it; that I just couldn’t fathom. I can accept constructive criticism but I can’t allow someone to tell me what I meant to say or what I should have said.

How was that experience for you?

At times it was stressful because as a self published author you’re entitled to do all marketing and promoting on your own. Some times my husband and I would stay up all night trying to find different avenues to promote “Sentenced At Birth”, and some nights he’d be up by his self marketing the book. At the same time it was great going the independent route because you’re not on anyone’s schedule but your own and again you have creative control; which is a major plus for me. So I would say I enjoyed the experience and thank God for my husband because he made it so much easier.

Would you do it again?

I would. If I found a publisher that was willing to allow me to go there creatively without interruption then I might consider the traditional route, but I must say I love the freedom.

'Sentenced at Birth’. Part One was a very heart wrenching read. There are things that many people will identify with and many won't. But most have definitely heard about.

What made you decide to write this book?

Honestly I can’t say; the story actually picked me. I sat down intending to write something totally different. I had a story in my head already and it had absolutely nothing to do with what appeared on the first few pages, but when I began to read what I was writing I loved it. Not to mention the characters began to take on a life of their own.

Is any part of it something you have experienced firsthand or are the stories derived from personal observances?

The story is not my own personal story but a very close friend of mine whom I have lost all contact with (because of this thing called life) went through a similar upbringing. Many nights I would sit with her and cry wishing it was something I could do to make it better.

The Mother, drug addict, Pristine and the daughter, Chastity both hold very strong characters in the book. What was it like to get that from head to paper?

That was a major task all in itself. At times I felt like I was going crazy. Pristine and Chasity were real in my mind, I would actually hear their conversations and that was how I would write out their dialog. Sounds kind of crazy but it’s the truth.

(LOL we understand that one!)

How long did it take you to work this story out?

It took me almost a year to complete it because I kept going back in and changing it up.

What do you want the readers to take away from the story?

We know the affect drugs have on the person that’s using them but I would love for people to recognize the affect it has on the people behind the scenes, like the children. Most kids don’t speak out against abuse especially when it’s coming from their parents for two reasons. One being they want to protect their parents by all means and, secondly, because their scared. I want people to realize that mental and emotional abuse is just as harmful as physical and every child who has a parent on drugs is being abused in one way or another. People like to turn a blind eye to things they feel don’t affect them but children can’t fight for themselves. They need someone to stand up and protect them. I just want people to experience the truth through my writing and maybe just maybe the characters will become real to them and they’ll feel compelled to help.

Are you working on sequels?

I’m working on the sequel for “Sentenced At Birth” right now. I’m thinking of calling it “Still Sentenced” or “Sentenced At Birth, the saga continues”

What has writing this book taught you or done for you?

It has taught me that dreams do come true and anything worth having is worth working and waiting for. I sound like a hallmark card….LOL

Do you plan to write other books?

Of course, this is just the beginning for me, I have an idea in my head for another book. I’m looking forward to starting that story. I’m thinking maybe I’ll entitle that 'Father’s Ruined'

Do you have other creative outlets? If so, what are they?

I love to write poetry and go to open mic nights, get on stage and just release. It helps to relieve built up tension or writer’s block.

What Inspiration would you offer to others out there who are working to become published writers?

I would tell them to remain patient and allow God to work. Things take time but have faith and never give up.

One of my big fascinations is Artists that go on and on living their dreams and sharing with everyone. Larry White spent many years with Artists like the Whispers and Bobby Brown before forming his own band, In-A-Fect. This high energy band keeps the party moving in Las Vegas and anywhere else they can spread the party! Meet Larry White and In-A-Fect.

Hi Larry. How are you today?

I'm Good.

Let’s start with where you were born and what the musical climate was there?

I was born and raised in San Francisco CA. The Bay Area is a very musical place and I was lucky to have been raised there. Growing up in the 70’s in the Bay Area was definitely something any musician from that time would remember.

Was music a part of your family life?

Yes it was a part of my family life. My father and grandfather are both guitar players and my mom and her sisters have a never ending love of music. I remember my aunt Josie would come up on the weekends from L.A. with the latest 45’s and they would play those records all weekend long. My aunt would also give a dollar to dance like James Brown

Were you inspired by any Artists when you were young?

I was inspired by James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, EWF, Motown, Jackson 5, Temptations, Smokey Robinson.

Larry Did you sing as a child? What instruments did you play?

I only sang a little. I first started out playing the drums but living in San Francisco the houses are very close there. Our next door neighbor became ill and she asked my mom if I could stop playing the drums. My parents felt bad for me so my dad went out and bought me my first guitar. I started playing along to records at the age of nine in my garage. The guitar has been my first love ever since and bass is my second main instrument.

What were you like as a young boy?

I was respectful, but a lot of fun and a high energy child. My parents made it clear that I had to do all my homework and chores before I could play my music so that always kept me in line because I never wanted anything to get in the way of my music.

Do you have one memory about your childhood that stands out Artistically?

Yes, when Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched gave me $100 for playing a Jimi Hendrix guitar solo. I still have the napkin that she autographed for me to this day. Some people may remember that she was also a guitar player and sometimes played on her own show, as her own sister I think.

LOL I do remember that!

You were very young when you started your first group. What was the name of the group?

Larry and the High Tones, I put that group together in 5^th grade.

Was that the opening for your career?

When I auditioned for The Whispers and beat out 30 other guitar players. I was working on a beer truck for Olympia Beer. I kept telling my driving partner that I would not be there for long because I’m getting ready to join the Whispers, he just told me that in the meantime I just needed to get the beer delivered!

Did you know or feel then that your career would be as you wanted it?

Yes, and I never stopped believing in myself or music. Music just always sounded so good in my ears, it wasn’t hard to believe in. It consumes most of my thoughts all day long and probably always will. My drive to keep being successful in music is never ending.

All Artists understand that!

Larry do you write your own Songs?

Yes, I write all of my own songs. I probably write a song a day or at least have a new harmony in my head for a song if I can’t get in my studio on any given day.

What are some of the other musical things you’ve done?

I write and produce. I also enjoy helping kids who have the same drive I had when I was young. I have been fortunate enough to work with some really talented youth here in Las Vegas. I was also on the Solar Record label for many years.

What other groups have you been a part of?

I was with a group called Grand Theft out of San Francisco, Collage, The Whispers and Bobby Brown.

Did those experiences form the Larry White of today?

I learned something from each experience that I keep with me today, especially from my time with The Whispers. Each time I find myself in a challenging situation I often ask myself how the Whispers would handle it, or I actually pick up the phone and call them for advice. They are a good group of extremely professional guys.

It's great that you still have that connection for Inspiration Larry.

You now have a group, ‘In-A-Fect’. Tell us a little about your group? Who are the other members?

Larry White, Mark Brown, Clarence Harris, Charles Bush, H.B. Woods

We are a high energy cool school show band. We play Motown, R&B, pop and smooth ballads. We never have a song list when we do a show, if you want to be a part of my band you have to have a large song catalog committed to memory because we play based on how the crowd is reacting and what they want to hear on that particular night.

Now that sounds like a Musical rush!

What is your favorite song?

You’re traveling and performing practically non-stop. Are you a workaholic having fun?

If you’re having fun and love your career, is it really work? I’ve been told I am both a workaholic and a perfectionist, I could be called worse.

So, what makes you laugh?

I like a dry sense of humor, I like someone who can dish it out but can also take it. I’m not a prankster my nature, but if you pull one over on me be sure I’ll be getting you back one way or another.

As we know, talented and creative people have many Artistic outlets, do you have others? What Are they?

I enjoy spending time with my wife and we also have a one year old golden retriever (need I say more) but as far as an outlet, music gets 100% of my artistic outlet.

The Believer - Ramel Jasir Artist

Today I'd like to introduce you to Artist Ramel Jasir. Ramel is a fascinating Artist with a unique style and a love for color that comes out in big bold beautiful works!

Hi there Ramel. How are you today?

I am wonderful….

How’s your year going so far?

So far my year is going great. 2011 has been very good to me thus far.

I have to say, your work is beautiful. It’s so unique and detailed I can only imagine that you’ve had Artistic Vision since childhood. Is that the case?

Yes I have been an artist since my earliest memories. Like all children I started off drawing with crayons and school pencils but I was always very meticulous and was always trying to be the best artist in my class.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia in an area called Prentis Park on Elm Avenue.

Was there a creative outlet for you as a child?

Mostly drawing…. I was the youngest of 7 children on my mother’s side. By the time I was born my siblings were a few years older and one sister had already had a child of her own a few months before I was born. So I kind of grew up as an only child in my household because by the time I was about 11 or 12 everyone had moved out of the house except for me. So drawing was something I did all day every day. I had many sketch books and I would draw on the front and back of very page…..lol

What types of activities did you do in school that influenced you?

When I was in the second grade I use to draw pictures for other kids…. I usually charged a quarter which was big money in the second grade. I would draw pictures for other kids if they had a project or homework etc. so I always had a little extra lunch money. In high school, I was a little rebellious and craved attention, so I use to draw pictures of other students and faculty on the classroom desks. It was many months before they found out who was doing it. The pictures were hilarious because I was pretty good with realism by high school and I drew pretty fast. I never sat in the same desk during some of the classes and I would move from one desk to another right after drawing a picture and no one really noticed because I sat towards the back of the room. Other than, that I took art as an elective but I hated the class. Drawing fruit and still objects was boring as well although I appreciate still artwork nowadays.

Sounds like you had a lot of creative fun and skill as a child. Did you know then what you wanted to do with your life?

Well, I wanted to be an artist and everyone told me that was what I should do but there were always those to spoke about the “starving artist” and that you can’t really make any money drawing so I kind of stopped drawing for many years. I did a lot of abstract collages in ink towards my senior year, but girls, alcohol and the streets kind of ended any thoughts of pursuing an art career. To this day, I have not really drawn a complete picture in pencil since maybe 1988. I have done many abstract ink drawings but graphite and charcoal were mediums of choice.

What medium(s) do you work with?

Nowadays, I paint in mostly acrylic but I use graphite or charcoal in some of the work as well. I like to mix a lot of different mediums especially when it comes to texture. I may use joint compound, molding paste or even thick Gesso mixed with paint. My favorite is mixing Plaster of Paris with water and Gesso to make an interesting texture and it dry very fast. I have yet to use oil paint in any of my works but I plan to very soon. I have even used candle wax, which hardens pretty quick but I like the affect when I spread it quickly on wet paint with my palette knife.

What inspires you to create?

My Queen, children and simply the joy sharing and creating are my greatest inspirations. I love the seeing people’s faces when they see my artwork for the first time. I am not one of those people that can just start a conversation but if you ask me a question it is on….LOL. So the interaction with people when showing my work at home or at an exhibition is inspiration with in itself, especially when someone is able to find some kind of connection within my work. On April 6^th 2011 I will be having my first solo exhibition. I will be showcasing many of the pieces from my first two years as an artist. All but about four of the 35 or more pieces that will be shown were created after June 15, 2009 which was the day I found my self unemployed for the first time since I was a teenager. Not to mention that we had a baby on the way due in July. I had created several paintings before then but that day I really got serious and my subject matter seemed to change as well. That same summer I finally met some of my father’s children after years of searching and found out that I was the youngest of 33 children and also discovered that I was of Thailanese and Colombian descent on my fathers side. It was only the second picture I had ever seen of my father who died when I was 6 years old and I saw a picture of my grandfather for the first time who was from Thailand. I also found out that my great grandfather on my mother side was Caucasian and that my great grandmother was native American. Of course all of this threw me for a cultural loop. As I started to explore my ethnic background and family history, I started to discover other forms of indigenous art along the way. My palette went from mostly earth tone to multi-colored pieces in which I really enjoyed to create. Music was a critical factor in the direction of my paintings as well. Especially after I lost my job all of my paintings were mostly created while listening to music from Hector Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, El Gran Combo, Cheo Feliciano etc. and Fela Kuti. So Music was every instrumental in regards to the energy in my work so naturally a lot of my work is embedded with a lot of Taino Art and symbols. So again, this show will chronicle my first 2 years as an evolving visual artist show casing several different forms of indigenous and traditional contemporary art. One of the goals of my show is to try and transcend ethic or racial lines through my art by exposing those who visit my show to aboriginal art, northwest Indian art, African art, taino art etc all in one show…. These are forms of art that many would not have been otherwise exposed to. Sorry if I got of track a little.

That's OK. We love hearing all of the details! Do you have other Artistic outlets?

Yes, I write poetry and short stories…. And also play acoustic guitar from time to time.

I know that you are a Father. Do you include your children in the creative process? What is that like?

Well I have a one year old that will be two in July…. We have a two bed room duplex which is pretty big but not big enough for me to have a separate studio so part of my front room has been turned into part studio. It works out because I am a clean freak so I keep it pretty tidy….. but my son is always there while I am painting and always trying to get to my paints. No matter what I do or how loud I may yell, he will strategically re-evaluate his next plan of attack and this goes on day after day LOL but I love working around my son and it gives him an opportunity to see me in action and I can’t wait to purchase him his first paints. When my older children come over, they love to see the new work as well. It catches their attention for about 1 or 2 minutes and then it is off to the Xbox 360. Again I like having my son around but we do have to get a larger place soon so that I can have my own studio space.

Who are some of your favorite Artists?

There are a few. Haida artist Bill Reid, a multitude of old school aboriginal artists, Monet, Picasso of course and several local artists such as Sharon Bachman-Hanson, Clayton Singleton and the great Wayne Potrafka who has been one of the consistent pioneers of art in Hampton Roads for years.

What is the story behind ‘Itchy Eye’ and ‘The Believer’?

Well, 'Itchy Eye' is my first composition in regards to paintings so that was one is special for me. I mean, I did another painting that look like a little promo for Halloween or something but I consider Itchy Eye as being the first painting that I was really proud of. It was all trail and error and I had no idea how to paint trees. Even when I was drawing with ink and graphite I never used trees in my drawing. So that is why the branches are coming out from the side of the painting. So I decided to run with it because the yellowish moon looked like an eye so I wanted the branches of the tree to look like the veins of a person’s eye. I had no idea how to mix paint and no idea of light composition or orientation in a painting as well but I like how it came out. I may never sell that one.

'The Believer', was something quickly done in February of 2010…. I was thinking about my son when I did it because he has gray eyes and I had not seen him in several months being that he lives in a different state. Even though the picture is not of a child, my son inspired the eyes…. I knew that the eyes and orientation of the nose and mouth were not really correct but I liked it and left it alone…. I painted it in about 20 to 30 minutes. I originally called it “The Grey Fox” after this cool older cat that use to live down the street from me when I was a child. He was tall and cool as hell. The women in the area called him the Grey Fox LOL but I renamed it the Believer because he looked more spiritual to me than anything.

What’s coming up Artistically for you?

Like I mentioned before, I have a solo art exhibition coming up on April 6, 2011 at the Old Dominion University VA Beach campus. The opening reception is from 6 to 8pm and the show will run through April 29^th. It is actually co-sponsored by Norfolk State University. I also have some work that will on exhibition at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach on April 8^th so it will be a busy week. I will be doing a couple of exhibitions in Europe as well in which I an working out travel and shipping now. Other than that I am looking forward to throwing a big birth day bash/art show on my birth day in July. I will be turning 40….. What better way to get my mind off of turning 40 than to have an art show!

Do you have any inspirational words you can offer other Artists?

Yes I do. Here are a few quotes I tell myself several times a week. 'Plan your works and work your plans'. 'Those who fail to plan, plan to fail'. 'The first time you settle for less is when you get less than what you settle for in the first place' and most importantly, 'Anything that your mind can conceive can be brought for onto the physical plane so make it happen'. Don’t sit around waiting for opportunity to come knocking, create your own opportunities and most importantly learn the business side of art so you will not fall for any dealer, collectors scams out there and there are plenty.

Let me introduce you to a women with a smile as big as the sun and a character to match! Pamela Sunshine. Pamela is a multi-talented gem who shares her colorful energy with children and inspires them to be positive and free spirited.

Hello Pamela. What musical fun are you up to today?

Hi. I am currently recording a 5 song EP of my grown up songs. This is very exciting and the songs are turning out great. Some are songs I wrote quite a while ago and it is great to see them coming out into the light. I am also starting new kids CD in March, which is very exciting.

Let’s talk about childhood. Where are you from?

Born in Vancouver BC to parents who emigrated from England. I grew up in the small town of Haney, now Maple Ridge and moved to England at 17 with my family. It was a very exciting place to be as so much incredible music was being made there.

What was your childhood like? Was there a lot of music?

My mom always sang and my parents loved music. I grew up listening to a widely eclectic mix of genres. Every Sunday my Dad put on classical music after dinner and it was quite amazing. Also Ella Fitzgerald and Lois Armstrong, the Harmonicats, everything really.

Are there other musical people in your family?

All my kids are musical, and my daughter Beth is a singer/songwriter and we often perform together. We used to do so regularly as Two Tall Women and even toured the UK together. Now we support one another and pursue our own projects as well.

What types of creative things did you do as a child?

I took piano lessons from the age of 6 and loved singing. I was in school choirs etc and also in the school musical.

What inspired/inspires you to create your music for children?

I became a teacher, I always wanted to be a teacher, and loved sharing songs with kids in my class. When I had my own kids I started doing childrens CDs and shows. My philosophy with kid’s music is that children should be empowered to be music makers and not spectators. I encourage participation and audience involvement in my shows.

Your music is empowering and engaging. And nature appears to be a big inspiration. Is that the case? What about it inspires you?

Quite a few of my songs for children involve nature. I used to play outside a lot and as a teen and got great solace from being outside, sitting by the river or ocean. I guess it is natural to write about this subject. Let’s Go Climb the Rockies and See The Snow among others, are songs that just came to me, they are like all songs, a gift.

You live by the water, I know that must be awe-inspiring. How much time do you spend at the water? Are you inspired to write or sing when you’re there?

I used to be inspired by this, the first song I ever wrote involved the sea at Scarborough in Yorks, England, where I went to college. Also many early songs referenced the Alouette River where I used to play as a child. Now I am more inspired by hope and joy.

Do you write all of your own songs and music?

I love writing my own songs and music. My first children’s CD when I performed as Pamarama, a singing clown, had a mix of originals and traditional favorites. I also did a childrens CD of singing games and chants, which were traditional. As Pamela Sunshine, my CDs are full of my original songs.

Pamela, do you or have you performed live? If so, where?

I have been performing live for years. I started out entertaining children as Pamarama and then Pam Southwell and now my children’s music is presented under the stage name Pamela Sunshine. I do concerts, festivals, community events etc. Last year I played the Kids Stage at World Fest in Los Angeles and that was lots of fun.

Of all of your songs, which is your favorite?

Probably Growing Up Green.

What one thing would you like to do that you haven’t yet as far as your career is concerned?

I would like to release a Storytelling CD. It has been a dream of mine for a while and I have the name, The Stories of Three. Recently I connected with someone who does soundscapes and sound effects, so we plan to work together on the stories.

Do you have any other Creative Outlets and what are they?

I am currently uploading songs and chants for children to my youtube channel, http://www.youtube.com/pamelasunehinetv and promoting it. I am excited to be archiving all the songs etc that I have gathered over the years I have worked with children.

I also blog. I have several blogs, one supporting and promoting women in music, http://violetfemmesmusic.blogspot.com and another that shares my ideas and work within education, http://www.pamscreativeclassroom.com . I sing for adults as well as children and have just set up a site for my grown up music, http://www.pamcarrmusic.com

I also paint when I get the time. lol

What Inspiration would you share with others following their dreams?

Right now I just feel so joyful to be supporting my artist and I encourage others to commit to their creativity. Once you do you are led to do what is right for you. Listen to the creator within and follow your heart. I had so much help from books like the Artists Way by Julia Cameron.

I have a productions company called Magic Puddle Productions and we are excited to say that the Growing Up Green CD is in libraries across Canada and is now in US libraries. This month Growing Up Green won a Kids Music Award for CD of the month and also got a rave review in New York’s School Library Journal, the world’s largest reviewer of Children’s multi media for libraries.

Hi everyone! I’m happy to introduce you to Chef/Artist Charles "Chef Chaz" Smith and his company Culinary Artists! With many delicious years of experience, travel, knowledge and determination Charles is on his way to Culinary stardom and I’m happy to be able to share this interview with you.

Hi Charles! Let’s start at the beginning of Charles Smith. One thing we discover is that all Artists had the creative energy even as small children. Even if they didn’t recognize it. What were you like as a child?

My parents say I showed skill in drawing as early as age 4. I was an imaginative and creative child. I enjoyed reading about other countries. My maternal grandmother worked for a wealthy family and was an excellent cook. She was also multi-lingual and a real "foodie". I remember she would take me to some of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh and other cities and never made any food strange to me. By age 10 I loved caviar, veal sweetbreads (thymus/pancreas), foie gras and escargot. This prompted me to want to create new things to eat at home.

Are there other Artists in your family?

I have two older brothers who are artists, but I can't remember them painting after marriage.

Charles do you remember you first experience cooking a meal and what it felt like?

Before I was old enough to use the stove myself, I would melt things in or on the toaster creating bizarre concoctions to set beside my dad's dinner plate when he got home from work. I remember the pride I felt watching him eat what I made. To this day he's one of my biggest fans.

When and how did you realize you wanted to be a Culinary Artist?

With close to 15 years of hotel/restaurant experience and a degree in art, I would often create dishes for my gallery receptions. But I soon realized although many people enjoyed the art...everyone loved the food. BINGO! Birth of The Culinary Artists!

How did you get your start down the path?

Since I'd worked or managed nearly every front-of-house restaurant position and had been cooking for friends for years, it was a natural transition into catering.

Charles I’ve seen a wide variety of your fabulous dishes. What are your specialties and favorites?

About 12 years ago I started traveling to different countries learning about the foods that I love. I spend a few weeks or a few months soaking up as much as I can. I'm comfortable with the food of India, Thailand, Italy, Morocco and Spain. But since most of my years in the industry were in French restaurants...French food is still my favorite cuisine.

What are some of your ‘Kitchen Dos and Don’ts?

DO wash hands often

DO use the freshest and best ingredients possible

DO keep your knives sharp

DON'T forget to taste everything

Always cook with passion from the heart

What’s the largest affair you’ve catered? Do you work alone?

I was hired to cook for a weeklong church convention. I took 3 helpers with me and they put us up in a hotel to cook lunch and dinner for 200 - 400 each day. I do all of the cooking.

What would be your Dream setting for preparing and catering a meal?

Recently I enjoyed being a Private Chef in Beverly Hills. But, in general I love to cook for people who know good food and love to eat. Also having fresh ingredients on hand is key.

You were on ‘Grill It’ with Bobby Flay in August 2010. Aside from being able to cook with Bobby, what was a personal best about that experience for you?

Cooking side by side with an Iron Chef like Bobby Flay was an amazing, But the high point was when he tasted one of my dishes and said, "Wow, that's good and cooked perfectly!"

Where can we see that episode?

Food Network will re-air shows periodically and of course I was given a copy of my episode. But for those who missed it...maybe they'll post it to their archives.

What’s next for The Culinary Artists?

What's next? Expanding our corporate catering, the Take Home Chef/ Private Chef service is bigger now and I'm being hired for weeks at a time even flown to other cities. Drive-By Gourmet is in demand, an exclusive underground supper club and a cook book on the horizon.

You also paint. Fabulously I might add. What medium do you like best? Do you paint regularly?

Thank you! Pencils was my first medium and many say still my best, I still paint abstracts and portraits, but now by commission only...like the one I did for Whoppi Goldberg.

Here's a portrait I did that includes the "cooking dynamic" of my mom'side of the family. The grandmother I spoke about, the grandfather who was also an excellent cook (I never met him) and my mom (in this portrait she's about 21)

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful Art. What Inspiration/Advice would you give to upcoming Culinary Artists and Artists in general when it comes to following the Dream?

Believe in yourself. Work hard for what you want and hone your skills to get there. You have the power to shape your future.

I'd like to introduce you to Morgan Clayton. This beautiful multi-talented singer, songwriter, musician is on her Dream Journey and gracing us with her lovely voice along the way!

Hello Morgan. How are you today?

Quite wonderful actually! Thanks for asking.

Let’s talk about the beginning first.

How old were you when you first decided Music was what you wanted to do?

I have been involved in music since my grade school years; however it wasn’t until tenth grade that I wrote and composed my very first original song. I believe that experience confirmed my passion for the art of musical creation.

What types of things inspired you?

Foremost, my faith as a child of God and a follower of Jesus Christ is an inspiration in all aspects of my life. I know that all of myself and my talents are due to God! So I am very grateful for my abilities in an art form that I love. (=… Now, if it weren’t for my parents I would have never been forced to audition for my first church solo in younger days! Haha, I hated it at the time, but assessing it in hindsight I can now say I am very thankful to them for it because I likely would have never mustered the courage on my own. My mother in particular has had a great impact on me musically. She grew up in a very musical family and was/is asked to sing at various events due to her beautiful voice. She was also the choir director at my former church for some time, so she has always been an encouragement and an inspiration to me as well as a major factor in my vocal development. My remarkable husband has always encouraged me in my music and he himself is the inspiration for several of my songs! Also, my family in general has been a great inspiration. They have always supported me in my music and been present at all of my performances growing up. A lot of credit is due them for my musical progression.

When someone asked you what you wanted to be/do when you grew up, what was your response?

Well, if you asked me this when I was three, I probably would have answered, a lion! In third grade my response would have been a model/fashion designer/movie star/ singer/ writer. In junior high I was going to be a veterinarian all the way. In high school I was destined a future in music and theater. In early junior college I aspired to be a pharmacist/ coffee and book shop owner. Now, my response has evolved into a Chemical Engineer… So, if I’ve learned anything in life, it is that the future is always uncertain; and though I may be graduating as a Chemical engineering major, I know my life is not limited to any prior direction. However, I do know that no matter where I may ultimately find myself at in life, music is certain to be there as well, anchored deep within, tugging at my mind and soul, and bursting forth into creation.

Were there any major musical events for you in your childhood?

Ha, what is childhood exactly? I like to believe that we can always remain a child in spirit, regardless of our physical limitations!...but, I shall start from the beginning. (: I sang in my church’s children’s choir growing up, however my first musical events of significance came about in junior high. I participated in singing competitions which were held amongst mine various other schools. These were my first experiences in solo performing. In ninth grade I auditioned, by means of parental coercion (as stated earlier), and received the part to sing “Breath of Heaven” for my church’s Christmas play! From that point I became very involved in music. I began singing many specials in church, and continue to sing in church even now. I became a member of my high school’s choir and show choir, which later led to my becoming a part of the choir and show choir at my junior college as well. So needless to say, I participated in many musical performances and events by means of extracurricular activities. However, of all the musical events I have been a part of, playing the role of Sandy in my community college’s production of “Grease” has definitely been the most rewarding. I love acting and singing, so the combination of both wrapped within a portrayal of a beloved American classic was certainly an experience to treasure.

How long have you been singing and playing the Piano?

Haha, I have been singing since before I can remember… I have been singing well since about eighth grade. (; I began learning the piano in elementary school and have progressed from there, taking lessons off and on throughout high school.

Do you play any other Instruments?

As of now, no. I had to learn a few chords on the guitar for a role I played in “A Piece of My Heart.” I was Mary Jo, a singing artist who performed for the troops in Vietnam. However, I have no recollection of those chord fingerings now. I would love to actually learn to play the guitar one day though, and possibly the harmonica.

Where do you see yourself heading with your career?

I’m not quite certain where I see my future self musically; my only vision now is more songs! Currently my major focus is education, but my music is still a vital part of my life. When I need comfort, or relief from stress, music is always there reaching out to me. I just grab my notepad and pencil, head to the keyboard, and let my emotions take the reins.

A dream I do have though is to one day have my songs professionally recorded and possibly even expanded upon with additional instrumentation. That would be simply amazing.

Have you performed Live yet?

Yes! I perform live quite often. However, I have only performed an original song of mine live once. It was for a talent competition and I placed second. It was a grand experience.

What are you working on right now?

I have one song in the making that I believe has the potential to be my best song yet. It has powerful lyrics that encompass my outlook on life in regards to my faith and the necessity of personal goals and perseverance. So, not to give too much away here, it is a very personal song for me and I am very excited to discover the outcome!

Cry me a River. Whew! Renee your voice takes us back to a day when it was just as much about the delivery as it was about the message.

Let’s just start at the beginning. Where did you grow up?

"Wow, thank you. I've gotten some really great feedback from that song. Even super producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins (I thought I was dreaming) heard it, he tweeted me and told me my voice was "dope" and asked did I do R&B, then he said "Don't ever let no one tell ur voice is crazy! Ur voice is so sick its SWINE FLU sick! Love the raspiness in it. Use that more", something I will never forget, what an honor. And I grew up in Akron, Ohio :)

Was music an important part of your childhood?

Very. Especially loved listening to Whitney Houston and Anita Baker as a young child. Music took me to other places.

How long have you been singing?

Since a young child, started off in the 'Sunshine Band' at my church, we were a lil group of kids singing our little hearts out for God. I remember actually singing my very first solo at around age 10, it was 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow', the way I felt, the reaction from the congregation, I knew singing was something I was blessed to do and I HAD to do :)

Is this something you always wanted to do?

Yes, most definitely. Feeling I can't even fully describe, when I sing.

You sing with intense passion. Where do you draw that from?

From the depths of my soul. I am in love with music, and maybe music is in love with me as well, emotions totally take over, it's a great experience.

Do you write your own songs and do you play any instruments?

Yes I do. Lyrics, melodies, all of that. I love it as well as interpreting others' songs. I can play piano, my Mom put me in lessons early. I used to do piano recitals twice a year, my teacher had lots of students, she put one together in spring, the other in winter and we'd play Christmas carols. My passion doesn't lie as much in piano as writing and singing, so I really don't play anymore.

Many of the tunes I’ve heard are Gospel. Is that where your musical love is?

Gospel is where it all began, in the church, and gospel has been heavily requested & something I love to do. I'd say jazz is where my musical love is the heaviest, although I love many genres.

Who are some of the major influences in your life?

Stevie Wonder, he was another one I listened to a lot along with Whitney, Anita, Mary J. Blige, El Debarge, all great artists with tons of SOUL. It doesn't end there, there are soooo many artists I love and respect, far too many to name, but these are the biggest influences in my life.

What else would you like to do in life as far as your career is concerned?

I'd love to become an established songwriter, as well as singer, for myself and other artists.

If you could duet with anyone who would it be?

Mary J. Blige, but then again, I may not make it to the end of the song, I'd probably pass out on the stage hehe.

Are there other Artistic endeavors for you?

Most definetly, like I mentioned above, writing, and I'll add arranging to that, piecing the songs together, structuring, layers, harmonies, I love it. So, writing/arranging for others, something else I'd love to achieve.

What types of things do you do for fun?

I don't do too much besides the norm, but whatever I do, I try to have as much fun as possible, even if that's going to the park, roller skating, writing, out to dinner. I love acting silly, that's fun lol. I've had some family and friends say I should be a singing comedian lol.

What keeps you going on this path Renee?

My love and passion for music, and the overwhelming feeling that my gifts were not gifted in vain, I am to use them. As long as I have them, I'm writing and singing for life, no matter what.

Are there any inspirational words you would care to share with our reader friends?

Yes, about life. It's not who you've been. who are you being? It's not about what you've done. what are you doing? Right NOW? We can't change the past, our perception maybe, that's it, but it's plenty, because we grow from what we now know, all our experiences, good or bad, right or wrong, up or down. Some thing I've learned, & I hope, at the very least, ONE person finds inspiration in that. Forward progress.

How are you? Living In Color I hope :-) September 15th... a year almost gone. As I reflect over it I can't believe the amount of fabulously colorful people I've met. The things I've learned. The color I've seen. And I can only imagine the wonderful things to come. It's a lot of fun reaching new Creative highs and I hope you are having just as much fun!

Britanie what got you started in piercing?

When I was younger I was amazed by the discovery channel and different history books about African cultures. It was crazy to me how they adorned themselves in different symbolic ways, it went from piercing nose bones to stretching ear lobes and neck rings. I was intrigued with their methods of worship.

What do you like about doing body modifications?

I love being able to gain a total strangers trust! Its true I am a bit of a control freak, as well as I enjoy advancing my clients physical/mental strength levels. I’ve learned that people use piercings and tattoos as a tool to take them from one point in life to another. It’s a different feeling being chosen as the person to take them on that journey. When I was younger I used to practice my methods on myself; it was a training tool that allowed me to know what type of “pain” I was putting my clients under. I guess it’s the rush that I'm attached to; it’s my drive to learn more and more each day I pierce!

Where in the world would you travel to if you could right now?

Honestly, I’m where I want to be right now. I just made my complete move to Queens NY to take over management of One Stroke tattoo gallery. It’s been a wonderful experience, the artists here are amazing, not to say my old shops artists weren’t; but I feel this was the business/personal move I needed at this point in my career. My expansion from West coast to East coast has really opened a lot of doors for me. My next move will be somewhere in Europe, I believe the body modification business out that way is definitely on a different level and I can wait to soak up that information.

When do you think you will stop gauging your ears?

I will probably do about 2 move gauges up then I’m finished, but I am going to pierce two more holes in them and will be gauging those as well. I won’t do those as big as my lower earlobes though I will most likely go to a 2 or 0 gauge and be done.

Why did you start in piercing?

I was 14 years old, a friend of mine wanted her 2 ear hole and no one would let her do it. So we were at the house bored out of our minds and she asks me if I had a needle. I was rather confused because up to this point I had never thought about actually doing the piercings myself. She gets some ice out of the freezer and has it on her ear for about 20 minutes; then tells me she’s ready! I held a quarter on the back of her ear to give a stronger base so the needle would go through easier (or so I thought), and BAM I jabbed the safety pin straight into it. I’d never heard a scream so loud, I fell on the floor laughing because I really didn’t know what else to do. She turned red… the needle was sticking through and it was time to put jewelry in. The 2nd ear wasn’t so bad because she pretty much knew what she was in for, her ears healed up pretty well and that was the beginning of my being a certified Needle Freak. I started reading more, started visiting the local shops in the city I lived in, and because of my age I couldn’t really get any professional guidance. They told me books to read and said if I was serious I’d train myself until I turned 17 then I could come and apprentice. So that’s exactly what I did…. More of my friends let me use them as pin cushions, and as weird as it sounds my desire for their screams became my full focus.

Music Men and Magic!

Today I had the absolute pleasure of spending an afternoon at the Balladyre Studios in Pinole, CA with Legendary Blues Musician Jimmy McCracklin, Bass Player Ted Wysinger, Musician and Studio Owner Jay Russio and Artist Denese Coleman.

Jimmy McCracklin is a legendary Singer, Songwriter, Musician who has written hundreds of songs and recorded over 30 Albums and at 86 years old he is still going strong and working it out! I am by no means, a star-gazer...but I have to tell you, being in this man's presence was an inspiring and magical experience. Jimmy has created music since the 1940's and judging by what I heard today the hits will keep on coming!

Jimmy has blessed us with such numbers as 'Yesterday is Gone and The Walk!' among so many others! (I will share more on the show). But more than that he has blessed us with a rich history of music and knowledge.

I call Ted a Storyteller because he writes songs that tell whole stories. That make you think. I was treated to far more than I expected. I learned, laughed and boogied! My interview and visit was so wonderful and extensive I've decided to do a mini show on them and their side of the music world in the near future. In the meanwhile.... Hi Steven. Thank you so much for chatting with us. Let's start with your childhood. As a child what did you want to be when you grew up?

You know, when I was younger I had a plethora of career aspirations as most youth. During the Michael Jackson era, I wanted to be a singer, when I got in middle school; I wanted to be President of the United States. Sadly, the guidance counselor I had at that time assured me that would not be attainable for someone like me. You can read between the lines on that one lol! I went through a lot of different emotions on what to be. Right after undergrad, I decided I would be a politician. I worked on Capitol Hill in Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott’s office as an intern and loved it. Politics is a contact sport so I decided against it after a while.

Did you read and write a lot as a youngster? Did you keep a Journal (diary)?

You know it’s funny that you ask. I remember I started keeping a log back in elementary school. I’d say around maybe the fourth or fifth grade. Even then I was girl crazy. I used to write passionate letters to some of the pretty girls in my class even then! Once my mom picked up my journal and it had an entry regarding an exchange that I had with a young lady in the neighborhood. She was not too happy to say the least but from there is where it started….I also had a teacher in Upward Bound named Mr. Pesapane who would have us do journals and he’d read and respond to our entries. I love the idea of journal logging!

Can you describe the feeling of getting words from heart and head to paper?

WOW! That is a great question… the heart is filled with a variety of emotions. It’s like channeling from the depths of your soul how you want to express your thoughts. Rage, sensuality, romance, frustrations are all emotions that we all feel at some point. Some are just better than others at expressing them in the written form. I think I was blessed with the ability to articulate my thoughts on paper for a reason. It’s almost like being possessed in some degree. Sometimes I can’t sleep because something heavy is in my heart. When I start writing, I can’t stop. It’s like crying in some respects. When you are either happy or sad, you tend to cry until you have relieved all the emotion that created the need to cry. I love writing from my heart.

Where you inspired by any famous or non famous writers? If so, who and why?

I’d say when I was in a course called Success Stories back in high school; it had to be Dr. Maya Angelou. We had been reading “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and I fell in love with her voice and her eloquence in writing. I also enjoyed song writers as well. Babyface, Big Daddy Kane (I still can recite Smooth Operator word for word!), The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Keith Sweat and most important my momma. She is excellent at written expression as well. I loved the way Babyface could write a love song and make it sound so wonderful. My favorite song of his is Whip Appeal. It is like you can so feel or identify that one woman who had that magical effect on you. His words were real. Big Daddy Kane was someone I looked up to as a teenager. He was smooth, the ladies LOVED him and his rhymes were wicked. Biggie and Pac told stories. With Biggie, you could just see exactly what he was talking about. I try my best to use solid imagery for my readers to follow along. Pac was just in your face and I respect that.

Are you a published writer? If so, where?

Currently I am not published but I will be very soon! My first book will be titled “Read My Soul”. I owe a dear friend of my Ms. Kimberly Simmons for that title. I just started putting together a compilation of poems around the end of October of 2009. My friend Celena Thomas told me to wait until after the Mercury Retrograde before I started writing lol….she is a character who keeps me laughing. The first book will be published through LuLu. I wasn’t sure where to go for publishing but Mrs. Latabia Woodward pointed me in the direction of LuLu after reading a few of my poems posted on Facebook. I promise you an autographed copy of my first book too. I plan to do an anthology and a novel.

Well thank you! I’ll look forward to that! --Steven I have read your poetry. It’s very intense and honestly the longest poems I’ve ever read. :-) Where does it come from?

LOL!! Thank you very much Stephanie! I am a very intense person. I am intense in EVERY aspect of my life. Some people are not privileged to see certain sides of me. Certain movies, I am left in tears either out of inspiration or sadness. My emotions are deep and I am not afraid to display my sensitivity around the “right” person. I absolutely LOVE black women!!!! When I say I love yall… I LOVE YALL! I have awesome relationships with black women. From the close friends, mentors, past relationships etc I just enjoy reflecting on a variety of ways how I feel about you all. I am also one of those men who love very hard. When I write romance poems, I am opening up my heart. I am displaying that there are some of us men who can let go and really love a woman intimately and passionately. I still believe in that mushy making folks sick to their stomach kind of love.

The poem “The Black Woman” is a poem that I wanted every black woman to feel my conviction, passion, love and devotion to her as a black man. This isn’t to say I dislike women of other ethnic backgrounds because that is so far from the truth. I just adore women who are in the semblance of my grandmother Vera and mother Oralene.

I find that a variety of things motivate me. Pain is something that we all have and continue to experience. I remember once I had a break up that hurt me to the core of my soul. I honestly was in so much pain; I didn’t get off the couch for a week. My friend Eugene pulled me out of that funk by igniting my competitive spirit on Playstation. I channel the pain from then and now for a few other poems. I hope that my poems would help someone else see through their pain and heartache. I also write angry poems. Being a gentle spirited person, some people tend to try to take advantage of you. All I will say is, never ever upset a poet. Yes, I do have some written too.

Can you share a paragraph or two with us?

The poem “The Black Woman” to me would do you all in injustice to cut it short. If I may, I’d like to give you the entire poem for your readers to enjoy.

Beauty, strength, radiance, sensuality, intelligence, grace and timeless elegance
Are some of the many qualities the black woman possess that has given her multi-dimensional reverence
Virtuosity, spirituality, loyalty and devotion are ingredients that give her a sensational and unmistakable preference
Her beautiful and delicate body is nothing short of a remarkable art; it is a work of excellent and majestic design
Her timeless exquisiteness is so eloquently infused; not even elderly age could cause her aesthetical appeal to decline
The black woman to me is the center of the universe; powerful and delightful just as the morning sunshine
From head to toe she is pristine and enchanting; coupled with an angelic countenance that features her enticingly full lips
Her figure is salaciously alluring, historically mystical with her distinct and generational feature being her astounding round hips
Her eyes can be piercing, profound, and inviting with peaceful serenity; yet there is something exhilarating to watch her as she kips.
The mother of Earth, the sister of the stars; my love for the black woman has become increasingly stronger over the years
Whenever there is trouble or time of immediate despair; she is always available in some form to provide comfort from our fears
If I had the highest and mightiest form of prestidigitation; I would work feverishly to ease and suppress each of black women’s tears.
Intimacy with a black woman reflects sentiments of cosmic enchantment; compared to the stars, the moon and the heavens above
The best and most precious gift in life a man could receive; is all or any of her strong, amazing unconditional love
Her touch is golden, her embrace is effervescent her spirit is warm and gentle equivalent to that of a dove
Of all of the riches and prize possessions I could own; the black woman stands alone as a most valuable and priceless treasure
Throughout my journey in life and my trials and tribulations; having her by my side is a glorious and continuous pleasure
While the world at times taunts you and doesn’t give you proper accolades; no other woman in my mind to you in this life will ever measure.

You have so much going on. Talk to me about some of the different creative things you do?

Yeah I guess you could say I have a lot going on (smile) I totally enjoy being busy too. I am working on a new poem called “Don’t Go”. En Vogue was a group I had a crush on since 6th grade so I am using their tune “Don’t Go” as the background of my poem. I use a program to cut and paste certain parts so the looping in the background only consists of the ladies singing the chorus. I am also Area Director of Lango Kids for Charles County, Maryland. This is a business venture that I enjoy because first, it provides an education component that not every student is afforded and second, it is an energetic and entertaining curriculum.
We offer Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and French to pre-school to grade five students afterschool. Being a parent takes creativity on the highest degree too!! My five year old Kamari thinks quick on her feet so therefore I have to one up her on every level to stay ahead of her precociousness. Also my Blog Talk Radio program “The Romantic Interlude Show” is another one of my creative activities. I host that show along with my lovely and awesome co-host, La’Kesha Johnson known as “Poison Ivy”. I totally have a lot of fun preparing and doing that show too!

How do you keep it all going?

That is a great question Stephanie. I will be the first to admit I am so imperfect. I can’t seem to say no. Some one may ask me to do something or participate and I will gladly accept. But I think I maintain by taking some time to do nothing. Some days or weekends, all I do is sit in the house and just relax. Some would say I am always on the go lol…….but I do take some time to smell the roses. That is the only way I’d be able to keep anything going.

I’ve seen you referred to as a Master Educator. What does that mean?

Another great question! A Master Educator is basically a teacher or academic professional who increases his or her knowledge in the principles and practices of the field of education. We do this to understand how best to articulate whatever concepts we are charged with disseminating to our students. There are a variety of concepts on how best to educate, through the M.Ed. program, you basically learn which ones have been most effective and least. We also learn the best methods for teaching and designing Pedagogy (K-12) and Andragogy (Adult) centered curriculums.

You have also taught school. What level did you teach?

I taught 5th grade and I also taught rising 3rd graders during summer school. That was tough with the rising third graders because a lot more patience was required. I also taught at a proprietary school also. That was an experience. They couldn’t understand why I cared so much about how they learned. They were not use to instructors caring I was told.

Was writing a part of your curriculum? If so, what wisdom did you pass on in regards to writing?

I did take a course in writing curriculum. It was interesting. My philosophy is “concept based” curriculum design. I find that to be far more engaging of the student’s learning. Two jobs that concepts have are to focus the study of topics and integrate the curriculum. If I am teaching my students about how the three branches of government work, I can give my students a particular hotbed subject appropriate for their age. They can divide into the US House of Representatives and also the US Senate. Now among them, they can organize two parties based on their ideologies. (Believe me, kids are very smart and can manage such a feat with ease). I can have a student serve as the President and a few as the Supreme Court. Once I explain the procedures, they can clearly understand the basics just from being heavily integrated into the concept. Hope that makes sense…there are some technical procedures missing but I want to keep it from boring your readers (smile).

You’re also into physical fitness?

YES !! I did some modeling shoots and had to really be on my game to do those. I first started in 10 grade with fitness. I was always a skinny guy but I was pretty much in good shape. A friend Qwaku had me and my boy Kelsey doing 200 sit-ups a night training in Tae Kwon Do. I never fell out of love with fitness. Now my diet fluctuates but I love to work out. I have a pull up bar at home and I also have dumb bells and a weight bench. I remember some of my friends saw my fitness shots, they would always say “I didn’t know you looked like that!” I keep it covered well I’d always reply lol…..But fitness is fun for me. Even though I have my lazy days, I enjoy very much working out and helping others too !

Do you have any advice on a starting point for people who want to catch up on healthy fitness?

I am a Team Beach Body Coach also so that is certainly right up my avenue. I think the first thing is to start getting the distractions out of your way. Don’t say it CAN’T be done. Anything is possible with hard work. Some things may take more work based on genetics. Develop a strong support system in achieving your goals. If you have negative folks around you, they don’t need to be there. Start off slowly and progress from there. Rome wasn’t built in a day, our bodies are no different.

It appears that your desire is to do and teach things that positively affect other lives. That’s beautiful. What inspiration would you like to share with up and coming writers, young and old?

Thank you Stephanie! I usually ask people when I get to know them on a personal level, “What are your passions?” That gets a lot of thoughts flowing from every individual. Use your passions as motivation for your writing. Whenever you have passion, everyone can feel it, taste it, see it. I want my readers to not only feel it, but I want them to be able to smell, taste and see it as well. I would say shoot for what passionately ignites their fires. That will certainly be a catalyst for great outcomes.

Check this beautiful artwork by Brandon McConnell of San Diego, CA. Brandon got his start by watching someone do it in Mexico for a half an hour and off he went!

Brandon says he is motivated by the challenge of creating something beautiful in a short amount of time and he loves the colors, textures and endless tricks and techniques.

"My Favorite part is making money but that's just because we need money to survive, besides that I enjoy making people happy with my art and just expressing my creativity."

Brandon has sold paintings all over the world. In 2008 he was flown to Tokyo, Japan To appear on a variety TV show called "The Popular Law Firm" to perform his "1 Minute painting" and a few other examples of my art. Recently Brandon was hired to do a spray paint art performance in Florida at a company picnic for the Kennedy Space Center. It was a huge success, selling over 50 paintings in 6 hours.

Brandon says "Spray paint art has opened up a whole new world for me and allows me to express my feelings and imagination. I am constantly learning new things and plan to continue to spray paint for as long as I can."

What is life with Kita like?

Life with me is spontaneous. You don't ever know if it's going to be a play hard or work hard day or if it's going to be a mix of the two. Plus, I have these whims where I want to be outrageous.I'm a bad girl with a good heart, so being a little outrageous is expected. lol

Where are you from?

I'm from Jeffersonville, Indiana. It's a small city right next to Louisville, Kentucky. To keep it simple I usually say I'm from Louisville.

Was music a part of your childhood?

To give you the short answer... I was five years old, I told my mom I wanted to sing and she put me in the church's youth choir. I've been singing ever since.

Was it your dream to be a music Artist when you were young?

Actually, it was my only dream. When I was young, I loved attention. Okay let me stop playing, I still do. Singing and performing allowed me to be myself. It all started because of a TV show I saw when I was five. I'll save that story for another time. :-)

What were you like as a child?

As a child, I was shy and nervous around people. I seemed to always be in trouble. I was artistic. I loved crafts, music, dancing, and writing. Anything I could do to use my imagination I was on it.

What types of music/artists have influenced you?

I would have to say you name it, it probably influenced me. I was a church kid, so gospel is on the top of the list. Yet, I listened to everything from Pat Benatar to the Beatles, to Stevie Wonder and Lena Horne, to Whitney and Mariah, to Michael and Janet Jackson, to Usher and Beyonce, to The Fray and Carrie Underwood and the list could go on for probably years. So if you put it in the CD player, I might not like it but would definitely give it a listen.

What Genre of music interests you most?

I call it Jazz-Hop.You're thinking, what is that? It's blend of all types of music but mainly Jazz, R&B, Pop and Hip-Hop. Fun music from a fun person.

What do you see/plan for your future in entertainment?

I really don't know what the Lord has for me. However I see myself everywhere from TV to movies to making more music. Maybe even the business side of things but regardless I still want to be making good music.

Have you performed anywhere?

Not recently. After the album is finished, performing and touring will be next on the agenda. Maybe even a few parties.

Are there any CDs in the works?

Yes. I'm currently working on my debut CD. It's still untitled as of now but look out for it this summer.

What other colorful things do you like to do?

I like to write, read, play and watch sports, shopping of course. I love being with my family and friends. I like making, planning, and designing things. I also just love making people smile or laugh.

Michelle how are you?

Fantabulous and uber-stressed at the same time. Lol.

Where did you grow up?

Long Island. Lived in Coram & Hicksville. Spent a lot of my spare time in the South Bronx, where my family owned their businesses.

Were you always into Fashion?

I didn’t like wearing pants as a little girl, I thought pants were for boys. My mom bought me corduroy overalls in turquoise & camel and I cried!!! I used to have custom dresses made and I would show the seamstress pamphlets on Oscar De La Renta dresses for Barbie as a reference. I also cut out my favorite dresses out of magazines and pasted them into photo albums, making my own magazines. I was an Eva Joia Gitano fanatic and wanted a Gucci bag when I was seven.

Yes, to answer your question.

What lessons did you learn as a child that carried into your career?

That one could be anything they wanted, they just had to work hard for it. I knew that my career had to do with something that made me happy, being that I would spend most of my days doing it.

You’ve been in the Fashion business for a few years? How did you get started?

I dabbled in a few different fashion arenas, including merchandising, advertising and marketing until I landed a job at a magazine in the fashion department.

You also worked for Source Magazine. What did you do there?

I started out as a Fashion Assistant in the editorial department. Became Fashion Editor a few years after.

Are you an independent Stylist now?

Yes. I have my company, Missfit Styles Inc., which offers various fashion related services such as styling, personal shopping, and image consulting

What do you like most about being a Stylist?

Styling is my way of making garments into art.

Is everyday a fashionable event for you? I mean like do you wake up and think Style, Color, Action?

I do. Even if I’m dressed super casual, there was a thought process behind it.

You are Stylist for many people. Who are a few of the people you style or have styled for?

Mostly men: TI, Kid Cudi, DaddyYankee… I work more with female models for editorial.

What are your favorite style trends?

Crazy bags, high heels, over sized sunglasses. Extra large earrings

Michelle, what do you consider fashion no no’s?

You also do personal shopping? That sounds like fun. When you personal shop how do you determine what to get for each client?

Every client is their own individual. I don’t intend to make anyone look like anyone else or anyone they are not. I give people looks that are more of an “evolved sense of self”. Jackie is still Jackie, but improved.

What are some of the notable differences in dealing with male and female clients when it comes to fashion?

Women require more accessories and have more “aids” at their disposal. Women need bags, jewelry, hosiery etc. as well as bras, g-strings and the occasional spanx.

Most Artists (and True Fashion is an Art) have other Artistic Outlets, what are some of yours?

I love art. I admire it in different forms. I love knowing creative and talented individuals. Love having custom artwork made. Makes me feel special.

What advice would you give to people who are trying to create a style of their own?

Don’t let any public outlet dictate who you are. Be expressive & embrace your individuality. If you can’t find what you want to wear, have it made. Make it yourself. Always stay ahead of the curve.

I'd like you to meet Kim Poole. My first interaction with Kim was over a year ago when she viewed one of my earlier videos on YouTube and without knowing me became a great source of info on lighting and how to use my webcam LOL. I've followed her every since and have always been inspired and amazed at the many colorful things she does.

How are you today Kim?
Fantastic, feeling good, well rested and energized!

What artful thing are you working on right now?

I have lots of irons in the fire. There is a project going on in every available corner of my house! At the moment, I am obsessed with what I call my "Yarn Art". I got the idea to create a hat for my friend who desperately needed one this past winter. I had a few skeins of yarn and a crochet needle but I don't understand crochet patterns, so I was left to my own invention. Surprised at the good outcome of the first hat, I kept making more. I love working with all the different colors of yarn and experimenting with this new kind of palette. I've made so many hats now, that I've decided to put them up for sale on my Etsy site. I am also going to give some of the hats to "Hats For The Homeless" this winter. "Hats For The Homeless" is a charity I have created. It's in the very early stages but I foresee this becoming a huge charity event in the near future.

That’s Great Kim. You’ll have to keep us updated on that.

You have so much energy! What motivates you and what keeps you going?

(Laughs) I don't have as much energy as it may look like in my videos. I have my down times, like everyone else. I just usually don't film them. Making people happy through my artwork and hopefully advancing my career in art, as opposed to maintaining my status as a starving artist is what motivates me. What keeps me going? Coffee and chocolate. (Laughs)

You’re from Cincinnati? Were you born there?

Yes, I was born in Cincinnati. Although as a child, we traveled back and forth a lot. My mother was a free spirit and we were always traveling out west to California, Colorado and Utah. I truly believe all this traveling as a young child has made me more adaptable to new surroundings and situations. People are creatures of habit, for the most part and some find it difficult to move around a lot, yet I love to travel!

You have so much going on. Were you busy as a child?

Heck yeah man! I was always busy as a child. I was "that kid" in the neighborhood who organized backyard carnivals, theater, lemonade stands, and nature hikes. I would dig clay from the creek bed and take it home and make pots and bake them in my mother's oven. I got a typewriter for my 12th birthday and I wrote and distributed a neighborhood newspaper. (Laughs) Yep, I was a busy child. I suppose it was the technique I used to make new friends since we were always on the move.

What other Art forms do you indulge in?

I am an active photographer and videographer, my trusty camera is with me wherever I go. I am attracted to creating artistic clothing right now, to be sold at concerts this spring and summer. I love to mix business with pleasure. I also have two acrylic paintings I am working on at the moment, The Tango and the Cincinnati Skyline (the view from my window). I also love Recycling-Art and have been working on bottles as vases for Christmas gifts, & rehabbing old book ends I found at a local thrift store, using Gary Reef's plexi-glass technique. I am also making an artistic lamp, using a technique I learned from Heather Snow. I used to be fervent in my work with Batik, and am reigniting that flame as well. My passion also tends toward writing and my daughters and I are working on a children’s book for which we have big dreams. We fantasize that one day Pixar will make it into a movie! Wow, exciting dreams, eh?

What do you do for fun?

Do you mean outside of art? Because ART is my fun. (Laughs) I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family, having big dinner parties with lots of good food, wine. I'm lucky to have kids and friends who play musical instruments so it's a lot of fun to listen and sing along after dinner. I also enjoy being in nature, camping or hiking in the woods, on the beach or in the mountains. Nature is my church. I love playing with my little fur baby, Miss Mollie, who has a genuine humorous personality and is such a joy and comfort to me.

Talk to us about the Traveling Painting.

I could go on forever about The Traveling Painting! It is one of my greatest passions. The Traveling Painting is a project I started in 2007. I sent a painting out on a journey around the world. The goal is every country in the world, every state in the United States. An artist from each country or state adds their magic on the painting and then sends it on to another country and/or artist. As of April 15, 2010 the painting has visited Florida, Michigan, The United Kingdom, Norway, South Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Ireland and Israel. At this very moment the painting is in transit, on its way to Germany. The goal is for the painting to see a new country/artist every two weeks. The project now has it's own channel on YouTube. Kyle (aka AcademyArtVenture) has been a big help in the creation of this channel. At the Genesis of the project, I was continually asked, "What are you going to do with the painting when it's finished?" I would always answer "It's not the destination, it's the journey." I still believe that, however some exciting developments in the evolution of the project have been occurring. There is a book in the making and plans for future art exhibits and conventions. It's very exciting! A portion of the proceeds from the project's earnings will be given to Gary Reef's "Artists In Need" foundation, benefitting artists all around the world. Of course, these things will take time, but it is nice to know that this wonderful project will not just travel but will actually help artists in need in the future.

How has this experience rewarded you?

I think the greatest gift I have received from the project is purely having the opportunity to connect with and make new friends all around the world. An opportunity that I may not have had, were it not for the project. It's been an amazing journey so far and I have met so many wonderful human beings and fantastic artists, it's difficult to put the rewards into words. The rewards aren't tangible, they're feelings, lovely feelings. I feel the project is our own personal contribution to World Peace. A simple way of communicating to our world leaders that people from every country in the world can and want to live in harmony. Yesterday, The Traveling Painting left the hands of Josef Rault, an artist from Israel. Josef sent the painting on to Coboldt, an artist who lives in Germany. From Israel to Germany, it gives me goose bumps and a warm fuzzy feeling inside. That is the reward of The Traveling Painting Project experience.

What is your favorite Art or Craft?

That is a tough question, I am like a little kid in a candy store when it comes to art! I want to try everything. I want to learn how to do every technique. I want to experience it all. What's my favorite? Every single thing to do with art, everything is my favorite. Doing the same type of art over and over again would be too much like working in a factory and I definitely do not put out factory artwork.

You’re keeping a video diary of your life basically. What prompted you to do this?

I lost my mother, my best friend, when I was just twenty-seven. The simple reason for my keeping a video diary is for my three children. I want them to have a place where they can go, after I've gone to next realm, and still be able to see and hear me on the days when they really miss me and need a "Mommy" fix. I wish YouTube had been around when my mother was still alive, because even at the age of 54, some days I still need my own "Mommy" fix.

What is the most personal thing you would ever post?

I have pretty much been an open book on YouTube. As to what I might or might not post in the future, that remains a mystery, even to me.

What do you see in the future of Art and Mixed Media? For example I see a lot more young motivated artists expressing themselves in ways we’ve never seen before thanks to motivation and technology. What do you see?

I think you're right Steph, art is definitely heading in the direction of the new technologies and it is going to be simply amazing. Exciting stuff you'd never dream of seeing is going to come to fruition. Now, I haven't done any research on this subject, nor have I ever seen it, this is totally off the top of my head at this exact moment. You know how they have been fooling around with the hologram stuff, right? In the future, I see we will come home from a hard day at the office and be able to push a button on a console that will turn our living quarters into 3 dimensional artworks of our choice! You could "decorate" each individual room with a different painting by a famous artist or use one of your own original paintings. Talk about mixed media! The paintings are transformed into living, breathing, moving, holograms. You could create your own world to be anyway you want it, to suit your mood for the day. Each hologram painting would come complete with default sounds and scents that the painting would have if it were real or you can program your own. Imagine you are walking through a Paul Cezanne painting where everything in the painting comes to life, the native women from Tahiti are walking past you, carrying their baskets. They look real. You can program them to speak to you, program them to say whatever you want! You hear the sounds of the waves. You can smell the fresh fruit in their baskets, the scent of sea salt in the air. Imagine a Frida Kahlo painting, the monkeys are chattering and jumping from tree to tree! I'd choose the Salvador Dali painting "Sleep" (1937) for my bedroom. I'd program the giant head to waiver ever so gently upon it's crutches and make creaking, calming, soothing sounds that would lull me to sleep. Your home could be transformed into whatever artworks you choose. You could have special themes for parties, create your own original artwork for your guests and special events. Halloween would be a real hoot! Think about the ways this technology could change art museums, art shows! Well that's my wild imagination, but I do believe art will take a turn in this direction at some point in the future. I hope I live long enough to see it. Talk about living in color!

Hello Stephanie. My you have a lot going on! I don’t even know where to start LOL.

LOL!! Yes, I am extremely busy these days and I’m loving every minute of it!

What are you up to right now?

WOW… that is a loaded question LOL! I recently launched my newest company, My Life Keys, LLC., along with my business partner, Tavaghn “Montster” Monts. My Life Keys offers Life Coaching and Motivational Speaking, as well as positive affirmation CDs and books, inspirational t-shirts, and a beautiful line of meditation candles and jewelry. In addition to that, I am also the CEO of Wise Owl Management and am a Personal Manager for a lot of reality television stars, a couple of musicians, an Olympian, a few models… the list goes on and on. I am living my dreams!

I’ve seen your videos and followed your progress and I am always inspired.

Thank you so much!! I love to hear that! That is confirmation that I am doing the right thing.

Let’s talk about your life as a Personal Manager first. You manage Reality Stars and other Entertainers?

Yes, I do. I manage quite a few people who work in various industries. It definitely keeps me on my toes.

What do you do as a personal manager?

It is my responsibility to manage every aspect, both personal and business, of my clients’ lives. I put together their schedules, make sure that they are prepared for interviews, shows, different jobs, etc., I am in charge of their media training, I dissect every contract and offer that comes across my desk for each of them, I maintain their public images, accompany them to various events, talk them through any problems or circumstances that they may find themselves having…. I am their Mom, Sister, Best Friend, Wife, etc. I am involved in every aspect of their lives.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a Manager?

Seeing my clients accomplish their goals and dreams. There is nothing better or more rewarding then being part of someone else living in their purpose.

We all tend to retain a part of our childhood as we grow. What part would you say is most prevalent in your character today?

Nobody has ever asked me that question before. I love it! I’d have to say that it is most definitely perseverance. My Grandma moved here from Spain, knowing no English, and she managed to teach herself the language, get a GED, attend and graduate from nursing school, and become an LVN, all while being married to an abusive, alcoholic husband and raising 4 children, one of whom was disabled. The other person who raised me was my Mom and I watched her work 3 jobs to keep a roof over our heads and make sure that I had everything that I needed. Even when times got hard and they didn’t feel like it, they persevered through it all. THAT is what I have chosen to retain from my childhood.

When someone asked the ‘what do you want to do when you grow up’ question what did you say?

It varied as I grew up. Initially, I wanted to be a singer and a lawyer. Then I wanted to be a news anchor woman, similar to Diane Sawyer. That turned into me wanting to be a sports broadcaster like Jayne Kennedy. The irony is that I was able to accomplish all of those dreams on various levels, (with the exception of being a lawyer). The one thing that has never changed is that I’ve always wanted to help and inspire people.

You’ve been chronicling your weight loss. What has that experience been like? Would you say sharing it has helped you on your Journey?

It has been both scary and inspirational. I originally began chronicling my weight loss as a way to publically keep myself accountable. That didn’t work. LOL. I didn’t find success with my weight loss until I made the decision to commit to myself regardless of external circumstances. I have gotten some ridicule from blogs and different people but the majority of the responses have been positive. I don’t regret it for a minute.

How will you celebrate once you reach your target?

I plan on celebrating in two ways: 1.) By taking a weeklong trip to Turks & Caicos and 2.) Doing a photo shoot with the incomparable B. Breezy and G14 from The Studio Concept out in Atlanta, GA. I CANNOT wait!

Tell us a little about your company, ‘My Life Keys’

My Life Keys offers Life Coaching on an individual or group basis, and Motivational Speakers are also available to speak at different events, seminars, and conferences. It is my intense desire to teach people about who they really are and what they are really capable of. I strongly agree that we ALL come from Greatness and that we are Co-Creators with the Source who created us. We also offer positive affirmation cd’s and books, along with other self-help tools.

To date what would you say your greatest accomplishment has been?

Mother Teresa once said that people shouldn’t leave from you the same way they were when they arrived. I am most proud of that fact that people say that after having interacted with me, they are changed forever. I was born to inspire and motivate people to greatness. But, I don’t think I have accomplished my greatest goal yet… it’s right around the corner though…. I can feel it!

You are very passionate about life and your Journey. What other things move you?

I am moved by TRANSFORMATIONS. When someone finds their purpose and they are able to live in that purpose in spite of adversity, tragedy, or hardship, THAT is what inspires me! THAT is what I live for! If I can somehow be a part of someone being able to do that, I will have accomplished what I was put here to do.

You also sing? What do you like to sing and where can we hear your music?

Singing has always been a huge part of who I am, but it is only a passionate hobby of mine now LOL. Although my manager is slowly but surely trying to get me to pick it back up professionally. I had a solo CD out around 1994 that did marginally well and received some radio play, but I am best known for being part of a group called The Gospel Gangstas. They are one of the pioneers of Gospel rap and after seeing me perform on a small tour that I was part of, they recruited me to become the singer of their group. I was blessed enough to be able to tour with them for close to two years and I got to perform on BET, MTV, and various large venues throughout the United States. I even got the opportunity to work with greats such as Kirk Franklin, Bobby Jones, T-Bone, and Yolanda Adams. It is part of my life that I am VERY proud of and will never forget, but I’m fairly positive that my professional singing career is over.

What do you do for fun?

I LOVE to spend time with my God-Children, (there are 9 of them), and boring stuff like going to the movies, game night with my friends & family, you know, the simple things. My guilty pleasure is to just zone out and watch T.V., but I’m trying to let that go slowly but surely.
